Description Profile You Will Learn

When most people are asked about an example of rapid technological change, they are likely to answer with a story about the rise of the internet, or self-driving cars, or online commerce. Most would not go back to 1903 to talk about a spark that started a technological fire. But indeed, one of the most amazing, intense periods of innovation began on a sand dune in the United States when the Wright Brothers flew the first heavier-than-air craft. Just sixty-six years after that flight, humankind walked on the moon for the very first time. No engineering feat since has come close to matching that achievement.

But like all leaps into the future, progress was marked by costly poor decisions as well as wonderful creative insights. Each of those markers, both the good and the bad, are instructive in a world of rapid change, where innovating quickly and sometimes failing are critical to achieving sustainable advantage in a very competitive world. For every illustration of innovation and decision-making executed well, there are others that show hubris and a lack of creativity.

In this webinar, Patrick Mullane, Executive Director at Harvard Business School, will discuss how the rapid pace of technological change can introduce both significant risks and opportunities. He will weave together instructive stories of that seem on the surface to be unrelated but that teach us valuable lessons about how to lead, decide, and execute. Drawing on examples from a broad spectrum of industries and insights from research on leadership and decision making, Mr. Mullane will demonstrate how creative thinking and deliberate decision making inside of an organization cannot only lead to better decisions but can keep bad ones from being made in the first place.
